How Trauma Affects us and What to do About it

A traumatic event is an incident that causes physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological harm. The person experiencing the distressing event may feel threatened, anxious, or frightened as a result. The event poses a threat of serious injury or death to oneself or others and elicits feelings of intense fear, helplessness, or horror. Bessel van der Kolk notes that trauma is specifically an event that overwhelms the central nervous system, altering the way we process and recall memories. “Trauma is not the story of something that happened back then," he adds. "It's the current imprint of that pain, horror, and fear living inside people.” (The Body Keeps the Score) Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences. The traumatic event causes damage or injury to the psyche and may result in challenges in functioning or coping normally after the event. The three main types of trauma are acute, chronic, or complex. 1) Acute trauma results from a single incident, for example, a car accident. 2) Chronic trauma is repeated and prolonged such as domestic violence, physical or sexual abuse, or growing up as a child of an alcoholic or addict. 3) Complex trauma is exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive, interpersonal nature.
